Today is Good Friday, a day to remember the path to the cross, the suffering, the sacrifice, and the immense weight Jesus carried. It is a day where love was shown through pain, obedience through surrender, and where, for a moment, hope itself seemed to fall silent.

Jesus bore it all—not some of it, but all of it. During Lent, we have journeyed toward this moment, reflecting, surrendering, and drawing closer to God. We have prepared our hearts to understand the true meaning of His sacrifice, but there is a truth we must not miss: this was not just about what Jesus endured, but about what He made possible. Scripture tells us this was done “so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness.” This reveals that the cross was not only about forgiveness, but also about transformation. Something was broken so that something new could begin.

On Good Friday, we sit in the tension, because while we know what’s coming on Easter morning, the disciples didn’t. For them, this moment felt final. It felt like everything they had hoped for was lost, and sometimes, our lives can feel like that too. Moments when things don’t make sense or when prayers feel unanswered can feel like something has ended. But Good Friday reminds us that what looks like an ending in our lives may actually be the middle of God’s work, because what happens on the cross sets up what happens at the resurrection, and the sacrifice of today makes way for the victory of tomorrow.

So what does this mean for us right now, in our Lenten journey? It means we don’t rush past this day. We sit with it. We honor it. We remember the cost and we hold on to the promise. So today, take a moment to reflect. Let the weight of this sacrifice settle in your spirit. Let the love behind it touch your heart. And hold onto this truth, It wasn’t the end, it was the beginning of everything God was about to redeem.

Today is Maundy Thursday, a sacred moment in our Lenten journey, where we remember the night Jesus gathered with His disciples, broke bread, washed their feet, and prayed. Even while knowing what was ahead, Jesus did not grow silent. He stayed in conversation. He talked at the table, He talked while serving, He talked in the garden, and He talked to the Father.

That speaks to us today, because there are moments in our lives, especially in seasons like this, when we carry things that feel heavy, uncertain, or even overwhelming. So many questions we don’t have answers for, and so many emotions we can’t quite put into words. Sometimes, when it gets that heavy, the temptation is to grow quiet, but Maundy Thursday reminds us: don’t stop talking.

Jesus, fully aware of the cross before Him, did not withdraw from the Father. He leaned in. He prayed openly, honestly, and intimately. His prayer in John 17 is not rushed or distant; it is personal. It is intentional and rooted in a relationship. This comforts me because it reminds me that if Jesus needed to keep talking, so do we. Sometimes we think prayer must be structured or perfect. We wait until we have the right words or think we have to say it a certain way for God to hear us, but Maundy Thursday reminds us that prayer is simply a conversation with God, who is already present.

In other words, God is never far away. God is in the room. God is close enough to hear your whisper, close enough to understand your silence, and close enough to receive your honest words. So whatever you need today, keep talking. Talk to God about what’s heavy. Talk to God about what you’re hoping for. Talk to God about what you don’t understand. Talk to God about what you need, because the same Jesus who sat at the table with His disciples, who prayed in their presence, who invited them into that sacred moment, is the same God present with you now.

You are not praying into empty space. You are speaking to a God who listens, cares, and is already near. So today, let your heart stay open in conversation. Don’t hold back, don’t grow silent, and don’t stop speaking because God is in the room and God is listening.

There is a noise that lives in the head of every woman who has ever stood in a space that was not built for her. It whispers: Too much. Too soon. Too bold. It asks, with a tone that sounds almost reasonable: Is this necessary? There are moments in ministry when you don’t just plan, you push. You push past tradition. You push past internal hesitation. You push past the quiet whispers that say, “This might be too much.” This Women’s History Month, I made a decision to push. As a woman pastor, and the first in two of my three congregations, I carry both a calling and a responsibility. I know what it’s like to walk into spaces where my presence alone is a disruption.

The name of my Substack, Beyond The Altar, means more than a moment in worship. It speaks to what happens after the benediction; how what is released at the altar must live, breathe, and move beyond it. It is about carrying what is sacred into everyday spaces and refusing to let powerful encounters with God remain confined to a single place or moment.

As a woman in ministry and as a woman pastor, that conviction carries even deeper weight for me, because I have lived the reality of being affirmed in moments, yet questioned in movement. I have experienced what it means to be welcomed to the altar, but not always fully embraced beyond it. Too often, women are invited to speak in special seasons, highlighted on designated Sundays, and celebrated in contained spaces, but not consistently trusted with the ongoing rhythm of preaching, leading, and shaping the life of the church.

“Beyond The Altar With Reverend Orsella” is more than a title on Substack; it is my theology and my testimony. It is my refusal to accept that the voice God has given women should be limited to moments instead of movements. It is my declaration that what God releases through women is not temporary, not occasional, and not conditional. It is my commitment, as a pastor, to ensure that what is affirmed at the altar does not stop there, but continues to live, speak, and transform lives long after the service has ended.

So this year, I chose to celebrate Women’s History Month differently. I decided that every Sunday during Women’s History Month, a woman would stand flat-footed and declare the Word of God. Because women are not “special occasion” preachers, reserved only for Women’s Day or Mother’s Day. The voice of a woman is a daily breath.

We began with Rev. Ella Brandon, a retired Itinerant Elder in the AME Church and a faithful member of our ministerial staff, who opened the month with a word that still echoes in our spirits: “Just Reach.” She reminded us of the woman with the issue of blood who reached for the hem of Jesus’ garment, not for attention, not for applause, but for wholeness. Sometimes your breakthrough is on the other side of one courageous reach. There was something deeply powerful about beginning with a seasoned voice, wisdom that has walked with God through decades, calling us back to a simple yet transformative truth: faith is not always loud, but always intentional and always within reach.

The following week, in celebration of International Women’s Day, we were blessed by the Retired Bishop and President of the National Council of Churches, the Rt. Rev. Vashti Murphy McKenzie. Her sermon, “When Healing Isn’t Enough,” challenged us to go beyond surface restoration into true transformation. That day carried even deeper meaning, as Girl Scout Troop #1331 received the Bishop Vashti Visionary Patch, and she graciously signed their workbooks, creating a moment those young girls will never forget. Representation met impartation in real time.

The third Sunday brought the anointed voice of Bishop Erika D. Crawford, Presiding Prelate, 8th Episcopal District, who preached, “Just Keep Showing Up!” What she offered us was more than encouragement; it was a charge. She reminded us that showing up is not passive; it is an act of faith. It is choosing God again and again, even when life is uncertain, even when doors seem closed, even when your presence is questioned. Her message pressed us to understand that consistency is a form of obedience, and that there is power in being present long enough for God to move.

By the fourth week, I introduced a woman I lovingly call “Mary,” Rev. Dr. Stephanie-Joy Grigg, Minister to Women at Saint Luke AME Church. I named her “Mary” because whenever she is near, something in me leaps. If you know the story of Mary and Elizabeth, then you understand that some connections are spiritual confirmations. Her sermon, “Not Just Healed, but Whole!” reminded us that healing is not the final stop; wholeness is. And she challenged us not to leave the place of recovery too soon, but to remain there until God has made us whole. It was a word that settled deep, calling us to resist rushing the process and instead trust God enough to finish what He started within us.

And woven into this month was Saint Luke AME Church’s Annual SHE Shines! Gathering, an all-day experience where women and teen girls were poured into through workshops led by Rev. Jacqueline Glass, Dr. Zellex Z. Rivera, Elder Charlene Nevett, and Dr. Yoreel Trumpet. It was more than an event; it was an investment in generations. I am blessed to partner in ministry with a team of women who love the Lord, and love their sisters. Thank you, Minister to Women, Rev. Dr. Stephanie-Joy Grigg; President, Stephanie Woodley, E-Board Members, Beverly Graham, Stephanie Richards, Robin Summers, and Lynda Mitchell.

After sitting under such powerful preaching and teaching, I closed the month with a word titled, “She Did Not Waste Her Time.” In many ways, that sermon was not just about the woman in the text; it was about this entire month. Believe it or not, I almost talked myself out of celebrating Women’s History Month this way. I almost let the noise, the questions, the budget, the screenshots, the DM’s, the traditions, the expectations convince me to scale it back, but I’m so glad I didn’t.

Every week, the church and the world beyond it heard women. Men heard them. Boys heard them, and little girls saw them. This is what Beyond The Altar looks like. It’s not just voices echoing for a moment, but voices that establish a movement. It’s courage that doesn’t wait for permission, but creates new patterns. It’s a generation of women who are no longer confined to certain Sundays, but commissioned for every day.

I am better for it, and I am wiser for it. I am grateful I didn’t let the noise talk me out of this moment, because beyond the altar, a woman’s voice doesn’t fade; it amplifies. See you next year!

Paul’s words in Philippians call us to something intentional: “Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” This is an intentional invitation for us to examine how we are living in light of what we believe. During this Lenten journey, we sat in our private spaces of prayer long enough to ask a very important question: “Does my life reflect the glory I desire to encounter? When life comes at us from every angle, it is possible to long for God’s presence while still holding onto patterns that keep us distracted, divided, or disconnected. Paul reminds us that a life aligned with the gospel allows us to stand firm, unshaken by shifting circumstances or opposition. When the journey becomes difficult, we need not be discouraged. There is a profound strength that comes from being rooted in God’s presence, a strength that keeps us focused, even when life feels uncertain.

Paul also says something that challenges us: “it has been granted to you… not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him.” This does not always align with how we think about faith. We often associate God’s glory with ease, breakthrough, and visible blessings, but Paul reminds us that there are moments when walking closely with Christ will require endurance. There are moments when standing for truth, choosing love, or remaining faithful will stretch us, and still, even there, God’s glory is present.

I have come to understand that desiring God’s glory is not only about seeking powerful experiences, but also about living in such a way that our lives become reflections of that glory, in our character, our choices, and our consistency. God’s glory is revealed when we remain faithful and stand firm in love.

So today, let this be your quiet prayer: Lord, align my life with Your glory; not just what I seek, but how I live, not just what I feel, but how I walk, because the more we align our lives with the gospel, the more we begin to experience the very presence we desire. In that alignment, we discover that God’s glory is never far away.

There is a quiet encouragement in Paul’s words to the church at Philippi, a reminder that speaks directly to where many of us find ourselves in this season of reflection and growth: “God is not finished with you.”

Paul writes with gratitude and joy, not because the people are perfect, but because he sees evidence of God’s work in them. He recognizes that their faith is not static; it is active, growing, and unfolding. He then anchors that encouragement in a powerful truth: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.”

This is a season where we become more aware of ourselves; our habits, patterns, desires, and even our shortcomings. We pray, we fast, we reflect, and sometimes we come face to face with the reality that we are still growing in ways we didn’t fully realize. Sometimes this awareness can turn into discouragement. We might begin to think, “I should be further along by now.” “I should have mastered this by now.” “Why am I still working through this?” But Paul’s words gently redirect our thinking. The focus is not on how quickly we change; the focus is on who is doing the work. God began the work, God continues the work, and God will complete the work.

That truth releases us from the pressure of trying to transform ourselves in our own strength, because Lent is not about achieving spiritual perfection in forty days. It is about cooperating with God's ongoing work within us. This truth helps me find comfort in knowing that growth is a process, not a moment. There are lessons that unfold over time, because God is still shaping, refining, and strengthening us, often in ways we cannot fully see in the moment.

Even more, Paul speaks with confidence because he remains committed to us even when we feel inconsistent with ourselves. So today, if you find yourself aware of areas where you are still growing, let that awareness lead you toward grace, not frustration. Take a breath and remember that you are in process. God is still forming your heart, strengthening your faith, and shaping your life.

9 Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. 10 My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. 11 Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends, those who see me on the street flee from me. 12 I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. 13 For I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side!” They conspire against me and plot to take my life. 14 But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.

Today’s Lenten journey leads us to Psalm 31 where David is in a place of raw honesty. David does not hide his pain, he names it. He brings it fully before God with these words, “I am in distress.” There are moments in my life when that simple sentence says everything. Moments when emotions feel heavy, when my body feels tired, and when my soul feels stretched beyond what words can easily explain.

David describes how deeply his distress has affected him. His strength feels like it is failing and his surroundings feel uncertain. This is not a surface-level struggle; it is something that reaches into his whole being. If we are honest, many of us know what that feels like. There are seasons when we carry concerns quietly. We show up, we serve, we continue forward, but internally there are places that feel tender, weary, or unresolved. Lent slows us down enough to notice those places, and more importantly, to bring them before God without pretense.

Thankfully, the psalm does not end in distress. In the middle of everything David is feeling, he makes a powerful declaration: “But I trust in you, Lord; I say, ‘You are my God.’” That shift is important. David does not wait for his circumstances to change before choosing trust. He anchors himself in who God is, even while everything around him feels uncertain. Then comes one of the most comforting lines in this passage: “My times are in your hands.” That sentence carries so much peace. It means that our lives are not random. Our days are not outside of God’s awareness. The seasons we walk through, both the joyful and the difficult are held within the care of a faithful God.

As we reflect, surrender, and draw closer to the cross, we are reminded that God’s presence is not limited to our strongest moments. God is just as present in our vulnerability. I have found that there is a quiet strength that comes from placing our lives back into God’s hands; not because everything suddenly becomes easy, but because we are no longer carrying it alone.

So today, if you feel stretched or unsettled, let this be your prayer: “Lord, my times are in your hands.” Place your worries there because the same God who holds your future is already holding you now.

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

As we continue walking through this Lenten journey, Ephesians 2:8–10 offers a word we need to hear again and again: grace. Paul gently brings us back to the center: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith.” Grace is the ground beneath this whole journey. Lent has a way of revealing both our hunger for God and our human limitations. Some days we feel focused and faithful. Other days, we feel distracted, tired, or behind in the commitments we made. On those days especially, this scripture reminds us that our relationship with God was never built on our ability to get everything right; it is a gift.

We are not engaging in this spiritual practice to earn God’s love; we are responding to a love we have already received. We are not trying to become worthy of grace. We are learning how to live from it. Paul also says something just as beautiful: “For we are God’s handiwork.” Another translation says “workmanship,” but I love the tenderness of the word handiwork. It reminds me that God is still shaping us with care. We are not accidents. We are not abandoned projects. We are being formed by the hands of a loving God.

This season is not only about what we are leaving behind; it is also about what God is making of us. Grace saves us, and grace continues to shape us. God is forming us for a life of love, mercy, justice, compassion, and faithfulness, the good works prepared for us long before we ever arrived at this moment.

So today, take a breath and let grace hold you, steady you, and let grace remind you that God’s love is not a reward for the disciplined; it is a gift for the willing. As you continue this Lenten walk, remember that you are not dragging yourself toward God. Grace is already carrying you there.

Psalm 143:1 gives us language for the days when prayer feels less polished and more urgent. There are moments in our spiritual lives when we come to God with carefully chosen words, thoughtful gratitude, and quiet reflection. But then there are other moments, and if we are honest, when all we can do is cry out, “Lord, hear my prayer.”

That opening line feels deeply human to me. It is simple, direct, and full of need. David is not performing spirituality here. He is not dressing up his pain or pretending to be stronger than he is. He is bringing his whole heart before God and asking to be heard.

I think that is one of the hidden gifts of Lent. This season invites us to be honest about the places where we are still waiting for relief, still wrestling with burdens, and still in need of mercy. Lent strips away the pressure to appear spiritually composed and reminds us that God can handle the truth of where we are.

And sometimes the truth is this: we are tired; we need help, and we do not have the words beyond “Lord, hear me.” What I love about this verse is that David roots his prayer not in his own worthiness, but in God’s character. He says, “In your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief.” In other words, David is saying, “God, I am asking You to respond because of who You are.”

That matters because during Lent, as we reflect on our lives and draw closer to the cross, we are reminded again and again that our hope has never rested in our perfection. Our hope rests in the faithfulness of God. God hears us not because we have earned divine attention, but because mercy is part of God’s nature. There is something deeply comforting about that. It means we can come to God early in the morning, before the day fully begins, with all that is unsettled in us. We can bring the prayers we have prayed many times before. We can bring the tears, the weariness, the questions, and even the silence, and we can trust that God is not irritated by our need. God is attentive to it.

So today, as you continue this Lenten walk, let yourself pray honestly. Resist the urge to make it sound impressive. Just bring God what is real, because one sincere cry for mercy can become holy ground, and sometimes the most powerful prayer in this season is not long or elaborate. Sometimes it is simply this: Lord, hear my prayer.

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” 28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied. 29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”; 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.

One of the most sacred invitations of this season is not just surrender, but silence. In Matthew 9:27–31, two blind men cry out to Jesus with bold faith, calling Him “Son of David.” When Jesus restores their sight, He tells them something unexpected: “See that no one knows about this.”

It feels almost contradictory. Why would Jesus perform a miracle and then ask for silence? Because not every move of God is meant for immediate display. Some things are too sacred, still forming, and too holy to be rushed into public view. Lent teaches us this truth: God does His deepest work in quiet places. We live in a world that encourages constant sharing, testimonies posted in real time, and breakthroughs announced before they are fully formed. But Jesus reminds us that there is a season where what God is doing in you is not for the crowd, it is for your consecration.

Those blind men had just received their sight, but they had not yet fully stepped into understanding. Their miracle was real, but its form was, and is still, unfolding with us. There are prayers God is answering right now that don’t need a microphone. There are breakthroughs happening in your spirit that require stillness to take root, and there are parts of your healing that must be nurtured in private before they can be sustained in public.

Lent is the sacred space where we learn to hold what God is doing without rushing to announce it. Silence is not absence. Silence is preparation. Jesus was moving toward the cross with intention, not urgency. During this Lenten season, we are invited to do the same; to slow down, to listen, and to allow God to shape us beneath the surface. You may be in a season where God has done something remarkable in your life, but instead of broadcasting it, He is asking you to sit with it; to protect it, and to grow in it. Don’t rush this moment, because what God is forming in the quiet will sustain you in the noise.

As we walk toward the cross, remember this: before there is a public victory, there is always a private surrender. Before there is testimony, there is transformation. Sometimes, the holiest response to what God has done… is simply to sit in awe and be still.

6 He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—he remains faithful forever. 7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, 8 the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. 9 The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

Psalm 146:6–9 (NIV) reminds us that the God we serve is not distant or unaware of our lives. The psalmist declares that the Lord is the One “who made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them, remains faithful forever.” This powerful affirmation becomes meaningful during the Lenten season, when many believers intentionally walk through spiritual reflection, sacrifice, and sometimes quiet wilderness moments with God.

Lent often feels like a wilderness season. It is a time when we slow down, examine our hearts, and sit honestly with God about who we are and who we are becoming. In that sacred stillness, some of us become aware of our fatigue, our questions, or even the weight of circumstances we cannot control. Psalm 146 reminds us that even in those wilderness spaces, we are not forgotten.

The psalmist paints a picture of a God who is actively attentive to the lives of people. God “upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.” God “sets prisoners free.” God “gives sight to the blind.” God “lifts up those who are bowed down.” This is not the description of a distant Creator who started the world and stepped away. This is the testimony of a faithful God who sees, remembers, and responds.

Sometimes the wilderness makes us feel unseen. When prayers seem unanswered, when the road feels longer than expected, or when the quiet stretches of life test our patience, it is easy to wonder if God has overlooked us. But Lent teaches us something deeper: the wilderness is not abandonment; it is preparation.

Throughout Scripture, God meets people in the wilderness. Moses encountered God in the desert. Elijah heard God in the wilderness wind and whisper. Even Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness before fully entering His ministry. In each of those moments, God knew exactly where they were.

If your Lenten journey feels like a quiet desert season, take comfort in this truth: the God who created heaven and earth has not lost sight of you. God remembers your prayers, sees your faithfulness, and knows your name. So today, breathe deeply and trust this promise: you are known, you are remembered, and you are never forgotten.

The psalm begins with a deeply personal declaration: “Praise the Lord, my soul.” It’s almost as if the psalmist reminds himself to refocus his heart. Sometimes we need that kind of spiritual self-talk, moments where we gently call our own souls back to what truly matters.

Lent is a season that invites this kind of reflection. As we slow down, pray more intentionally, and examine our lives before God, we begin to notice the subtle places where our trust has drifted. It may not be obvious at first, but over time, we can begin to focus heavily on things never meant to carry the weight of our hope.

The psalmist gives a clear warning: “Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.” In other words, do not build your deepest hope on human strength, status, influence, or control. Human plans are temporary. Even the most powerful leaders are limited. Their plans can fade as quickly as they are made.

This reminder is not meant to discourage us; it is meant to free us because when we stop expecting ultimate security from human systems, achievements, or approval, we make room to place our trust where it truly belongs, in God.

The psalm concludes with a beautiful promise: “Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God.”

That word blessed speaks of a deep sense of spiritual well-being. It describes a life anchored in something stable, something lasting. When our help comes from God, we are not tossed around by every change in circumstance. Our hope becomes steadier, because it rests on the One who does not change.

During Lent, this truth becomes especially meaningful. As we move closer to the cross and ultimately toward the resurrection, we are reminded that our salvation would never come from human effort. It comes from the faithful love of God revealed through Christ.

So today, pause and ask yourself gently: Where have I been placing my trust? Then turn your heart again toward the God who is able to sustain, guide, and strengthen you. When your help comes from the Lord, your soul finds a kind of rest that no human promise could ever provide. In that place of trust, praise begins to rise naturally, not just from our lips, but from the deepest places of our lives.

As we continue this Lenten journey, the apostle Paul offers us a simple and profound invitation: “Follow God’s example… and walk in the way of love.” Lent often leads us to reflect on sacrifice, repentance, and spiritual discipline, but at the heart of it all is love; the love that Christ demonstrated through His life and ultimately through His sacrifice.

Paul opens by establishing our identity: God’s “dearly loved children.” This foundational phrase is key. Our commitment to a distinct way of living isn’t driven by pressure or duty, but by who we are. We are able to walk in love because we were first loved by God. When we grasp that we are the beloved children of God, our entire outlook changes. The focus moves from striving to earn God’s approval to simply responding to the profound love already lavished upon us.

During Lent, we often give something up; perhaps a habit, a distraction, or a comfort to create space for God to work within us. But this passage reminds us that spiritual formation is not only about what we surrender but also about how we live. Paul calls us to “walk” in love, which suggests movement, intention, and daily practice.
